Choosing a tribometer is not a consumer electronics decision. It is a compliance decision — one that determines whether your test data will hold up in a regulatory audit, a product certification, or a courtroom.
The Four Tribometer Types
1. Portable Digital Tribometer (BOT-3000E)
The BOT-3000E, manufactured by Walkway Management Group, is a fully automated, motorized tribometer that measures the dynamic coefficient of friction (DCOF) of hard-surface flooring. It is the only tribometer approved for ANSI A326.3 compliance testing.
Strengths: Automated operation, high repeatability, low operator variability, ANSI A326.3 approval, portable (~25 lbs), digital data output.
2. Pendulum Tester (British Pendulum)
The pendulum tester swings a weighted arm across a floor surface, reporting a Pendulum Test Value (PTV). Referenced in ASTM E303-22 and international standards including DIN EN 16165.
Limitations: Operator-dependent results. Not approved for ANSI A326.3 compliance testing.
3. Drag Sled Tribometer
A weighted block pulled across the floor surface. Simple concept, relatively low cost for manual versions.
Limitations: Highly susceptible to operator variability. Generally not accepted for ANSI A326.3 compliance.
4. Variable-Angle Ramp
Referenced in DIN EN 51130. Places a test subject on an inclined, oiled surface until slipping occurs.
Limitations: Lab-only, not portable, requires human test subjects. Not referenced by ANSI A326.3.
Five Criteria That Should Drive Your Decision
1. Standards Compliance
If your testing program must satisfy ANSI A326.3, only one instrument qualifies: the BOT-3000E. No pendulum, drag sled, or ramp test satisfies ANSI A326.3.
2. Repeatability
The BOT-3000E’s fully automated operation delivers industry-leading repeatability. Operator-to-operator variability is effectively eliminated.
3. Operator Variability
Automated instruments like the BOT-3000E minimize this risk by design. The operator positions the device and initiates the test. The machine does the rest.
4. Portability and Field Use
The BOT-3000E weighs approximately 25 pounds and operates on battery power, making it fully field-deployable.
5. Total Cost of Ownership
A less expensive instrument that produces unreliable or non-compliant data is not a savings — it is a liability. One challenged test result in litigation can cost more than a decade of BOT-3000E ownership.
The Bottom Line
For any organization that needs to demonstrate slip resistance compliance under ANSI A326.3, the BOT-3000E is not simply the best tribometer. It is the only approved instrument for the standard that governs the U.S. market.
